romeo&juliet

These violent delights have violent ends.

Shakespeare's classic tale of doomed star-crossed lovers is dynamically re-imagined.

Director: Geordie Brookman

Designer: Pip Runciman

Lighting Designer: Geoff Cobham

Composer/Sound Designer: Andrew Howard

Cast: Terence Crawford, Roman Vaculik, Josephine Were, Mark Saturno, Thomas Conroy, Michaela Cantwell

We all know Romeo and Juliet. Wherefore art thou Romeo? Check. A rose by any other name? Check.

But what if all 18 roles were played by only six actors? What if the play's opening words ("Two households, both alike in dignity") were actually delivered as a eulogy at the funeral of the doomed lovers, and then the six remaining characters (the Capulets, Lady Montague, Benvolio, Father Laurence and Prince Escalus of Verona) then acted out the play as an investigation, wondering what went wrong?

Adapting one of Shakespeare's most famous texts together with wife Nicki Bloom, director Geordie Brookman's vision for romeo&juliet is a dynamic re-imagining of the classic tale of star-crossed lovers, or Shakespeare through the looking glass.

His ensemble includes a veteran of over 20 State Theatre productions (Terence Crawford) and a 2009 Australia Council of Arts graduate making her main stage debut (Josephine Were). Every actor portrays Romeo and Juliet at some point.

Designer Pip Runciman's very modern set and costume design promises no balconies, swords or tights...

Fond school memories of Shakespeare or not, come and see for yourself why this 400-year-old tale of grief, obsession, love and loss has influenced books, films and music across the generations. We doubt you've ever seen it performed like this, though!
