Eisteddfod

A darkly comic and quirky fantasy that launches season 2011 for five.point.one.

Director: Corey McMahon

Writer: Lally Katz

Cast: Kate Roxby, Brad Williams

Theatre company five.point.one launch their 2011 season with the South Australia premiere of The Eisteddfod, an original new play by Australian playwright Lally Katz.

The Eisteddfod is a darkly comic and quirky fantasy that explores suburban childhood and the role performance plays in our daily lives. Gerture and Abalone are brother and sister, living together after the bizarre deaths of their parents in a  claustrophobically destructive relationship of control, resentment and mutual dependence.

The Eisteddfod is a unique and exciting piece of theatre, where the line between fantasy and reality becomes increasingly blurred. Experimenting with form, time and place, The Eisteddfod is like a series of Chinese boxes; a play, within a play, within a play.

Directed by Corey McMahon, The Eisteddfod features Kate Roxby and Brad Williams, both 2008 Flinders Drama Graduates.

"Lally Katz is a truly original voice in the theatre and as a director, I am excited by the possibilities of a play like The Eisteddfod," says five.point.one Artistic Director Corey McMahon.

"In terms of structure, narrative and form, it is unlike anything five.point.one has produced before. Katz is one of Australia's most imaginative playwrights."

Now in their third year, the award-winning ensemble five.point.one has earned a reputation for producing their own unique style of contemporary theatre that is daring, exciting and provocative. Producing work that displays a diversity of genre, aesthetic, structure, tone and form, five.point.one believes the playwright is central to all good theatre and chooses writers who are courageous with their work, challenging both audiences and artists alike.
