Director: Ingrid Voorendt

Cast: Restless Dance Theatre dancers

Restless Dance Theatre, in association with the Adelaide Festival Centre's inSpace program, presents Beauty. Featuring five female dancers, Beauty investigates the notion of beauty and will explore Sir Francis Bacon’s famous idea that there is ‘no excellentbeauty that hath not some strangeness in theproportion’.

The dancers create images that are stunning yet strange, in response to classic images of women from visual art, taking a detailed and sculptural approach to the body. Exploring the notion of being or becoming an object of desire, the fleeting nature of youth, beautyand movement itself, the idea of being overcome by ‘unbearable’ beauty, and the despair, distance, terror and jealousy that beauty can evoke.

Beauty also plays with the idea that in order to recognise beauty we must also see its opposite, with a constant hint of the sinister. The work delves into the nature of female friendships, playing with intimacy, independence, imitation, competition, envy, rejection and bitchiness. Beauty is proudly sumptuously and subversively feminine, and visually captivating with moments of exquisite power.
